Reporter鈥檚 note: Nearly two years ago, I wrote a feature highlighting three male immigrant entrepreneurs sharing their challenges starting companies in the U.S. I thoroughly enjoyed researching and writing that article so I wanted to revisit the topic. This time I鈥檝e focused on three female immigrant startup founders. Their stories are profound.
Fatemeh Shirazi: Founder, CEO Of Microvi
came to the United States from Iran at the age of 17, right after she got out of high school.
The only daughter in a family of four children, Shirazi has always been 鈥渋ntensely鈥 interested in math and science, something that her parents encouraged.

She attended the and decided to pursue chemical engineering, ultimately becoming the only female in her class with a PhD at Oklahoma State University.
鈥淚t was kind of eye-opening,鈥 recalls the CEO and founder of Bay Area-based biotech company . 鈥淚 realized I was stepping into a very male-dominated industry and many times I thought to myself, 鈥楢m I ready for that? Are they going to accept me?鈥 But I loved the challenge.鈥

Along the way, Shirazi recognized her passion for nature, biology, water, and the environment so she shifted to environmental engineering. Upon graduating with her PhD, she went to work for a large consulting firm. However, as one of about 9,000 employees, Shirazi didn鈥檛 feel she was 鈥渃ontributing much in the field鈥 or doing work she was very passionate about.
So she left to start Microvi in 2008 where she has pioneered the MicroNiche Engineering鈩 platform as 鈥渁 new class of waste-free, high performance biological technologies that form the basis of Microvi鈥檚 commercial activities.鈥 The platform, Shirazi said, is protected by dozens of patents awarded and pending.
When she formed the company, Shirazi was immediately aware of the challenges that came with being not only a founder, but an immigrant female founder in an industry dominated by white, male founders.
鈥淚 very quickly recognized that I had to make a choice between changing myself to fit a certain narrative of what was expected of a CEO or continue to identify as an immigrant and a woman founder. I not only chose to keep my identity, I decided to double down on it.鈥
By doubling down, Shirazi tried taking advice she鈥檇 received from others to recruit white males for her leadership team 鈥渋n a kind of misguided hope to make us more attractive to VCs.鈥
鈥淚 tried to interview someone to replace me and run the company but very quickly realized they lacked the same passion and entrepreneurial spirit,鈥 she said. 鈥淭o me, you can鈥檛 really hire a CEO and say, 鈥榟ere is your role so you have to be passionate about this new venture because of this and that.鈥 It doesn鈥檛 happen that way, especially at the early stage.鈥
Shirazi ultimately stayed true to herself and has made her hiring reflective of her own wish for a diverse world. Almost half of her company鈥檚 17 employees are from different countries and different ethnicities.
At the end of the day, Shirazi believes immigrants inherently have what it takes to be good entrepreneurs in that both are dealing with 鈥渧ery unclear鈥 paths and with high risk.
鈥淭here鈥檚 a parallel, immigrants are taking risks and developing strategies to deal with completely foreign phenomena and creatively solve challenges,鈥 she said. 鈥淭here are so many unknowns from a cultural perspective of how things are done. Immigrants are just so brave, going to another country and maximizing resources and continually reinventing themselves. As such, I believe entrepreneurs and immigrants share a very common sense of persistence.鈥
Today, Microvi has three offices in the Bay Area as well as locations in Seattle and the United Kingdom. Shirazi is committed to bringing new biological solutions to many industries, including one focused on the removal of nitrate from drinking water, an ingredient she said has been linked to five major cancers.
Charu Sharma: Founder OF NextPlay.ai
grew up in India in a family where education was encouraged but having a career was not, especially not an entrepreneurial one. And especially not if you were a woman.
鈥淚n our family, education was highly valued and in the culture many people study engineering and medicine, but many women especially are not allowed to work,鈥 she said. 鈥淚nstead they are married off and don鈥檛 have careers.鈥
That idea didn鈥檛 sit well with Sharma.
She came to the United State on a college scholarship and while getting degrees in Economics and Physics from , she interned at a fintech startup called .聽 The startup was started by the and led by Divya Narendra, who was of Indian origin. There, Sharma learned that a startup with few resources could be a good place for a person eager to learn.

鈥淎t startups, people wear multiple hats. I learned a lot and became convinced that startups is where I could make an impact,鈥 Sharma said. 鈥淥ther college friends in their internships were making coffee and copies while I was talking to clients and coding.鈥
Sharma went on to intern at a healthcare startup where two of the executives were also of South Asian American origin and, she said, 鈥 served as role models.鈥
Inspired when she returned to college, Sharma had ideas for her own startups. One business concept connected senior job seekers to alums of their colleges while another focused on career prep.
鈥淚 entered the startup world and saw CEOs who looked like me,鈥 she told 附近上门 News. 鈥淚 thought, 鈥榠f they could do it, then I could do it too.鈥 The only difference was that they were male.鈥
Although those particular ideas never translated into startups, Sharma gained one valuable character trait: confidence.
Over time, Sharma realized that diversity comes in different forms, i.e. it wasn鈥檛 just about skin color or ethnicity. In the startup world there was a lack of female CEOs in general. So she started a nonprofit called 鈥淕o Against the Flow,鈥 ultimately putting together a book highlighting female founders and then filming an award-winning documentary.
After graduating, Sharma ended up at , where she met a female mentor who was also an immigrant. That mentor 鈥渃hanged鈥 her life, she said.
鈥淚 owe everything related to my career to her,鈥 said Sharma. 鈥淚 wanted to pay it forward. My experience over the years showed me that women, immigrants and minorities simply did not have the same access when it came to career advancement opportunities.鈥
As a result, Sharma built a mentorship program for women at LinkedIn that was so popular that in just a few days she had received over 100 emails from potential mentors and mentees. Surprisingly, there were more responses from potential mentors.
鈥淭here were untapped mentors with expertise to share,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e were leaving so much on the table by not tapping into them. And while mentoring was not new, it was often for those who were already privileged or went to top schools. Often women and minorities were left behind.鈥
Sharma was so motivated, she eventually conducted the initiative on a bigger scale. In early 2017 she started her current company, ,聽 and developed an AI-driven mobile app that has been put in place by the likes of Twitter, Intuit, Coca-Cola, Splunk and Logitech.
Employees can download the app and build a profile. Then, based on their goals, they get matched with a mentor within their company. So far, she鈥檚 raised a small seed round of about $600,000 from investors including , LinkedIn鈥檚 head of engineering and former TechCrunch CEO Heather Hardy.
Fiona Lee: Co-founder Of Pod Foods
came from Singapore to the U.S. in 2014, where she met . The pair connected well and decided to start a cookie company. That venture in late 2017 evolved into what is today, a B2B marketplace for (currently over 350) brands to sell their products to grocery stores. The San Francisco-based company has been growing steadily and recently launched a second hub in Chicago, according to Lee. It first raised money in 2017 in a pre-seed round led by , an early-stage venture capital firm focused on funding immigrant-founded startups. In June, the company closed a $3 million seed round led by .
As an immigrant female founder, Lee believes one of her biggest challenges revolved around communication.

鈥淚 was lucky in that we spoke English in Singapore but the English we learned included a different set of vocabulary,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd having a different accent from everyone else was an issue because how we sound to other people impacts our communication style. So I believe immigrants have to adjust in a way that founders that are born here don鈥檛 ever have to think about as much as we do.鈥
Besides language, Lee believes one of her biggest challenges was trying to cultivate relationships when starting from 鈥渮ero鈥 and 鈥渘ot knowing anyone.鈥
鈥淭rying to meet the right people and get to know them, and just break into any circles was hard,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut having an American co-founder really allowed me to integrate myself into the community.鈥
The influence of immigrants in the startup world, I believe, is underestimated. Last year, our own analysis of the most heavily funded U.S. unicorns found roughly half of those startups count an immigrant as a founder or chief executive. That piece was among the most shared on our site in our nearly two-and-a-half year history.
And in the startup world, those that make history are the ones that persevere despite, or as a result of, adversity. From what I鈥檝e seen and reported on over the years, and what I鈥檝e witnessed firsthand as the wife and daughter of immigrants, Shirazi has it right when she says that immigrants possess many of the traits that successful entrepreneurs do. We could all learn a thing or two from them.
